Lithium-ion batteries are indispensable in modern mobility solutions such as e-scooters, e-bikes and other electrical devices. But what happens when a battery catches fire? Due to the high temperatures and chemical reactions, such fires are difficult to extinguish.
A practical fire test was carried out in cooperation with the Kulmbach volunteer fire department. A 700 Wh lithium-ion battery was mechanically ignited.
The aim was to find out which Fire blanket is suitable for use in battery fires. Here are the results.
Table of contents
Experiment 1: Conventional fire blanket made of glass fiber
The first series of tests was carried out with a conventional fire blanket.
Technical data:
- Size: 1.60 x 1.80 m
- Material: Glass fiber
- Heat resistance: up to 550 °C
Test results:
- After a few seconds, the ceiling burned through.
- The flames penetrated the material.
- Particularly dangerous: the fire initially appeared to be extinguished for a few seconds, but then broke out uncontrollably on the sides and top of the ceiling.
These results show that conventional fire blankets are unsuitable for battery fires. They do not offer sufficient protection and can burn out within a few seconds.
Trial 2: VLITEX fire blanket
The VLITEX fire blanket - a solution specially developed for battery fires - was then tested.
Technical data:
- Size: 2.5 x 3 m
- Material: E-glass fiber with silicone coating on both sides
- Heat resistance: up to 1,000 °C
Test results:
- The ceiling resisted the high temperature and kept the flames under control.
- There were no holes so that the fire could not spread any further.
- The smoke development was greatly minimized.
- The fire was contained under the ceiling.
These results show that the VLITEX fire blanket is a safe and reliable solution for battery fires.
Which Fire blanket is the better choice?
Conventional fire blanket:
Not suitable for battery fires. It can burn out after just a few seconds and does not offer permanent protection.
VLITEX fire blanket:
- Developed for extreme temperatures
- Resistant up to 1,000 °C
- No burning through of the ceiling
- Minimized smoke development
- Safe containment of the fire
If you want to protect yourself from the dangers of lithium-ion battery fires, you should use a fire blanket should be used. More information about the VLITEX fire blanket can be found here: fire blankets from VLITEX

Why a specialized fire blanket is important
Lithium-ion battery fires are particularly dangerous. They develop temperatures of over 1,000 °C, release toxic gases and can spread explosively. This can be life-threatening, especially in enclosed spaces or vehicles.
The VLITEX fire blanket is a proven safety measure for:
- Fire departments
- Companies with e-mobility
- Workshops and logistics companies
- Private users with e-scooters, e-bikes or battery storage systems
Institutions such as the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) also recommend specialized protective measures for fires involving lithium-ion batteries.
